Finn was now sleeping in the backpack on Abby’s lap. He was completely worn out from the afternoons’ adventure.
Pintsize, who was still clinging tightly to Finn, was pretty shaken. He listened to Abby and MieMei talk and tried not to fall asleep. All the excitement this afternoon, on the toboggan slide, had tuckered out this little guy. But he tried to stay awake. He was still nervous. He wanted to make sure Abby would get home safely. He didn’t dare get lost again. She was his only chance to get back home.
Pintsize thought about his superpowers and suddenly he felt safer. He realized that each time he thought really hard about something he wished would happen, it came true. Now he truly believed that he could make anything happen. That thought made him feel safe.
“I won the race at Bedbug Park against Dyno by practicing and wishing real hard,” thought Pintsize. “And this time, when I wished hard enough, I found Abby. I’m going to wish hard about getting home to Mom and Dad and my friend, Dyno Mite.”
Pinty now heard Abby and MeiMei talking about boys and school and he smiled to himself. “Girls are silly,” he thought, “except for Cindy Mite.”
Why did you just shiver?” MeiMei asked Abby.
“I wouldn’t tell anyone except you,” Abby said to her new friend. “But….do you ever feel like someone is watching over you? It’s not a scary thing. It makes me feel safe. Like somebody is making sure nothing bad happens to me. Do I sound weird?”
“You mean like the spirit of an ancestor?” MeiMei asked. “I don’t think you’re weird. I have a friend that no one but me
can see. She follows me and protects me from harm. I can talk to her. I think she is an ancestor who passed on to another life. I don’t feel as lonely if I think she is watching out for me.”
“Hmm,” Abby considered MeiMei’s words. “Yes, maybe it’s something like that.”
“MeiMei, honey,” Grandma called. “Say goodbye to Abby. The next stop is ours.”
Abby said quickly, “Where do you live?”
“Shanghai,” said Meimei.
“We are going to Shanghai in a couple of days. Can you give me your phone number? I’ll try to let you know when we get there. Maybe we can meet. Maybe you could even watch Finn.”
“Yes!” MeiMei said. She handed Abby a piece of paper. She had quickly scribbled her phone number for her new friend.
“And here is my dad’s number.” Abby shoved a piece of paper into MeiMei’s bag.
MeiMei turned back and called down the aisle, “If you like flying kites, there is a park in Shanghai called Century Park. We can meet there.”
Abby turned and ran to her seat to wave from the window. She was confused by her feelings. She was happy and sad at the same time. She would miss talking to MeiMei, but she was excited to think that they might meet again in Shanghai.
