Don't Forget About Me
Chapter 8
"Hey, guys. Wait for me!" Abby called out.
“She is always trying to keep up with her older brother.” Pintsize thought, smiling to himself. Pintsize Plasma was getting tossed around in Abby’s backpack as she raced up the well-worn, cobblestone stairs of the Great Wall of China
.
Alex laughed as his sister followed him to the fortress, and said, “Abby, you’re too short to reach the rungs of the ladder and climb to the top.”
She’ll never beat Alex at his own game,” Pintsize thought. “But I’m sure she won’t stop trying.”
“Aw, Dad.…pleeease let me come up there!” she begged. Abby couldn’t let her brother have an adventure without her.
“Honey, your brother is right this time. You’re too small to climb these rungs,” Dad smiled. “We’ll find something special for you too.”
“Grammy and I are going to stay down here with you, sweetie,” Mom called over her shoulder, trying to console her little tomboy.
“Look down the stairs,” Grammy said, pointing and trying to distract Abby. “That looks like a wedding.”
“Oh, great,” Abby replied, tripping her way down the stone steps. “Can we get pictures. I can show them to my friends when we get home?” Abby was excited to see a bride in her beautiful, white, lace gown. She knew her friends would wish they had seen the glowing Chinese girl on her wedding day. Abby might be a tomboy and she might want to do everything her brother did, but she also loved to dress up and be a girl sometimes too.
Meanwhile, Pintsize was trying to hold onto Finn with his six little feet. Finn had moved up to the top of the sac so he could see too. Pinty didn’t want to get tossed over the Great Wall of China. The wall was enormous. It would be a long fall through the trees and branches to the bottom. “Ouch,” he thought. The poor little guy had to keep remembering what his dad had told him. “Half-pint, each time you are afraid, learn to calm yourself down. Every time you learn to relax, you will make yourself stronger. Soon you will be a superhero of strength. Then you will be able to do anything.”
“Hey, Abby! Guess what we saw when we looked out over the top of the fortress?” Alex cried out, racing down the steps towards his sister.
“I don’t really care, Alex,” Abby said, thinking that they were even now. “I had more fun watching the bride and groom get married.”
“But you will care,” he smirked. “We saw the toboggans going down the mountain. It looks like fun, but there was only one person on each toboggan.”
“Dad, I’m not going if I can’t sit with you,” she said.
“Don’t worry your little head, honey,” he said. “I’ll explain to the operator that we want to be together. I’m sure we can work something out. We should start walking to the slide now though. We don’t want to miss the bus. It would be a long walk back to our hotel in Beijing,” dad said smiling.
