NEW POEMS FOR KIDS TO LOVE

Willow’s Secret Adventure
Willow, our cuddly little rabbit,
Bounds over fresh mown lawn,
Chasing shadows through gardens,
Sprinkling enchantment ‘till dawn.
Ears all askew and flopping,
Drooping both hither and yon,
Fur flecked with white-and-beige speckles,
Willow burrows deep into the ground.
Moonlight guides her secret escapades,
As moonbeams shimmer through trees,
While her magic otherworldly adventures,
Cause her heart to soar and run free.
To babbling brook she is drawn.
Rushing water pulls her near.
As dawn replaces moonlight,
Willow sights a baby deer.
Who will move before the other?
Shock and fear race through their brains.
Willow learned at knee of her mother,
Be alert when blood rushes through veins.
She sees a new chance to take cover.
There’s a knothole in one of the trees.
Taught to hide by her little brother,
Like lightning, Willow runs to be free.
She huffs and puffs, running for safety,
Willow sprints home along country trails.
Once there, she jumps on Abby’s pillow
And happy thoughts again wag her tail.
Abby wakes to see her sweet bunny,
Snuggled close and all safe by her cheek.
Reassured that life is all sunny,
Warm and safe now, they both fall asleep.
Goodnight, Abby!
Goodnight, Willow!
Goodnight, moonlight.
Goodnight, baby deer.
ONE MORE PEEK AT A POEM
LITTLE CIRCUS MONKEY
Hello, little circus monkey,
Dangling upside down,
Wearing a polka-dot apron,
Just like your friend the clown.
I hope your mommy doesn’t worry,
I’m certain her mommy fears abound,
When she sees you dangling and spinning,
Does she worry you’ll fall to the ground?
And when your long day is over,
Does your mom soak you in the bath?
Does she tickle your tummy with clover,
To make you giggle and wiggle and laugh?
Do you speak like a baby cooing?
Do your friends understand what you say?
And then when you’re finally together,
Do your friends make up games of fair play?
How does a monkey leave the jungle?
And come to a country in the West?
Did you come by way of a dragon?
Or did a boat bring you on this quest?
Is your cage a queen’s summer palace,
Or a jail where you’re trapped all alone?
Does the circus feed you like Mommy,
Or throw you the occasional bone?
Do you live with your brothers and sisters?
Or do they live back home in the woods?
Do they search all day for their baby,
Hoping to take you back as they should?
And when Mom tucks you into your bed,
Does she snuggle you closely to sleep?
Or do you close those sad eyes in dread,
Hoping not to dissolve in a heap?
Monkey, you’re cuddly and huggable.
So I hope you are lucky each night,
To have Mommy rocking you closely,
Until you close your eyes and sleep tight.
We all want you safely home again.
Simply shut those brown eyes and wish hard.
And when you awake in the morning,
We all hope you are back in your own yard.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Jean Horst has always been passionate about reading and writing. She grew up summering along the sandy shores of Lake Huron, where she fell in love with nature—a topic that often crops up in her writing. She married in 1970 and then gave birth to two sons. Once they were in school, Horst joined her husband in the family construction business, which spurred her interest in designing and building custom homes.
Now a grandmother, Horst has spent a lot of time traveling, including an extended four-month stint in China. She combines her love of nature and travel to write imaginative, entertaining stories for children—her grandchildren, in particular. Her latest offering is Best Bedtime Rhymes: New Poems for Kids to Love.
