Abby's Secret
Chapter 6
Pintsize, who had been sitting on the edge of the bedspread and listening, was startled and sat up. “The Great Wall of China! How will I ever get home to Mom and Dad?” He thought for a moment, and then he had an idea. “I know,” he thought. “I’ll jump onto Finn and stay there until Abby gets back home. She will never forget to take Finn home with her. Dad told me to always be brave and to think things through. Dad would agree with this idea.”
The little bedbug hopped onto the floor and ran, huffing and puffing, across the room. Breathlessly he jumped onto Finn’s back in the hope that his plan would work. “I’ll bury myself deep down into his cozy fur,” Pinty thought.
Abby slammed her door behind her and ran across the hall to get Alex. She had decided to wear her prettiest, yellow, embroidered top over her cropped pants. She pulled on her pink sweater and matching shoes and brushed a blond curl away from her pretty blue eye. If Mom was taking pictures today, she wanted to look pretty when her friends back home saw her on Facebook.
“Abby, why were you running around and making so much noise in your room last night?” Alex asked his little sister.
“What noise?” she said, with a secretive smirk on her face.
“You better not have done what I think you did,” Alex warned, “or you are going to be in so much trouble.”
“Don’t worry about it,” she grinned. But secretly she did worry that her brother had figured out what she was hiding. If she let him in on her secret, and he told mom and dad, she knew she would be in big trouble. So Abby lied just a teensy bit and said, “And for your information, I was just dancing.” To herself she said, “That isn’t really a lie. I was dancing with Finn.” Out loud she said, “And you better not be saying anything to anybody. It’s none of your business,” Abby gave her brother a warning glare.
“Whatever!” Alex said.
Nervous now, Abby quickly ran back to her room to put Finn, her tiny papillon puppy, in her backpack. She was afraid the cleaning staff might find him in her suitcase. She’d keep him safely tucked away with her. “He never barks,” she thought. “Nobody will ever know. And I can feed him some of my scraps at lunch." Abby loved this little guy. He was soft and cuddly and she couldn't sleep at night without him curled up against her. She hadn't thought about what might happen when someone found out he was with her. But now she started to worry about dad seeing or hearing him on their trip to the Great Wall.
It was a good thing that Abby had no idea what was about to happen at the Great Wall of China. Her trip was going to become complicated beyond her imagination.
