Am I in China?
Chapter 2
“This isn’t Abby’s bedroom,” Pintsize realized, cautiously looking around. “Why is everybody using strange words?” He listened again and trembled. “I think that bump on my head made my brain go fuzzy.”
“Xièxie nǐ!” Abby said, when her mom handed her a glass of water.
“She shi knee? said Pintsize to himself, scratching his head.
And then he knew! “Xièxie nǐ! Doesn’t that mean ‘thank you’ in China,” he said, excitedly. “And ‘nĭ hăo’ means ‘hello’…Oh my…!” he shouted, putting his tiny hands to his rosy cheeks, “I’m in CHINA!”
Alex and Abby had been planning this holiday for forever. He remembered their Mom driving them to a new school every Saturday to learn this new language. Mandarin is what Chinese people speak. His human family’s vacation this year was a trip to China.
“Oh, no!” Pintsize shivered. “I want my mom…I want my dad…I want the life I always had.” The poor guy had calmed himself enough that he was able to figure out why he was in so much trouble.
“This is why mom said I wasn’t allowed to sleep on the floor. That’s why she told me to close the door. That’s why I’m not at home anymore!”
He quickly made a decision. “If I ever get home, I’m going to listen to everything mom says.”
Pinty didn’t see any signs of the rest of his family in the suitcase. “How would he get back home to them?” he worried.
But another part of him was excited to be having an adventure in a new land. He couldn't wait until he could tell his friend Dyno Mite. Dyno wouldn’t believe this one.
Being so scared for so long, and not knowing what might happen next, our adventurous little bug was tuckered out, for he was quite a young little bedbug and he tired easily. So he did what little bedbugs do, and fell asleep.
When he awoke another day had passed. He found himself in one corner of the leather, travel bag. Pintsize started jumping up and down. Even though he was still scared, he now knew exactly how he had gotten himself into this mess.
The night the family had left for China, Pinty had fallen asleep on Abby’s bedroom floor. When Abby packed her suitcase, he must have been on one of her socks. And that’s how Pintsize now found himself in China with his human family.
