“Baby, I know you’re upset, but the bus is leaving. We can’t go back.” Dad finally said.
They had looked all around for any signs of Finn. Against his better judgment Dad said, “I’ll get you another puppy when we get home from our trip.”
“It’s not the same,” she cried. Abby took Dad’s hand trying to pull him away from the shiny bus. But Dad was much stronger than Abby.
Abby had no choice but to climb on the bus with her family. Defeated, and trying to see through the haze of tears, she ran down the aisle and slumped into her seat.
“Boy, are you in trouble,” Alex said. “Why didn’t you tell me the truth when I asked about Finn. I might have been able to help you.”
“Right Alex. You’re probably laughing at me,” Abby cried. She was so miserable she couldn’t think straight. She struck out at the only person close to her.
Meanwhile, Pintsize was still clinging to Finn’s ear. He wanted to get home to his dad. He closed his eyes and wished as hard as he could to see Abby again. She was his only hope of ever getting back to his mom and dad.
Pintsize wanted to see Cindy Mite again. He wanted to be her superhero. When he’d been preparing for his race at Bedbug Park before coming to China, Cindy Mite had been right. Cindy had told Pintsize he had the ability to win if he wished real hard. It was then she told him he was her superhero. Pinty blushed thinking about what she said. He also wanted to see her brother, Dyno Mite, again. Pintsize had beaten Dyno in the race at Bedbug Park. Pinty was thrilled to show his dad and family how fast he could run. He had practised running for months. Now, he and Dyno had plans to race again next year. He just had to get back to America.
Right at that moment - just as Pintsize was remembering what Cindy Mite had called his superpowers - he and Finn crash landed inside a red and silver toboggan.
Pintsize heard a little girl’s voice speaking in Mandarin. He understood just enough to make out what she was saying.
“Nǎinai (which means grandma in China) can I keep him?”
Pintsize tried to listen carefully. He rubbed his head and concentrated. Pinty saw that he and Finn were clutched in the little girl’s arms.
“No, MeiMei. We must return him. He doesn’t belong to us,” her grandma said. “Some little girl or boy is probably desperately, searching for their pet.” Grandma had seen the tags on Finn’s neck
.
“But how will we find his owner?” MeiMei asked.
“I don’t know. But we must try, bao,” grandma said. “Some little person is probably very upset because this sweet little puppy is missing. You know how bad you would feel. We will try every way we can to find his real owner.”
