What is your favourite part of the holiday - food, friends, travelling to relative or just hanging out with time to do the things you love? And no school for about 4 days. Yes!
Thanksgiving is the beginning of the holiday season in the US. It's time to start thinking about what you want for your holiday gifts and about what gifts you want to buy for your favourite people. Soon all the stores will be decorated with festive lights and shiny decorations. You'll be able to buy candy canes, shortbread cookies, gingerbread men and chocolates of every kind. Fireplaces will be snapping and crackling and your dog will be curled up on the rug. If you live in a snowy area you will soon be able to go skating or tobogganing or skiing. And what about re-watching your favourite movies for this time of year. Festive music will be booming on the radio and in the malls as the jolly old man rings his bell to collect donations for the poor. Get out the paper and get out the pencils and start making a list of all the things on your wish list. It will soon be Christmas or Hanukkah or whatever customary holiday your family celebrates around this season of the year. Get ready!

SALUTING OUR TROOPS
Ashley is a very thoughtful little girl who wants to thank our Veterans for their courage. Ashley and her dad make a sign every year and go to the Remembrance Day parade and services in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Ashley's great grandfather served his country so that he could protect our freedom. Thank you great grandpa. And thank you to all the other brave men and women who have served. These men and women often had to leave their families behind and fly all over the world to serve in the wars or to serve as Peace Keepers. We salute all these brave men and women and thank them for their service. This is one of my favourite costumes for Halloween 2014. My young niece, Whitney, is a hairdresser. One of her coworkers painted Whitney's face so she would look like a cartoon character. - Great job girls. Does your school have a costume day for Halloween? Get out the face paint and get out the hair dye. This is the time of year to let the real you out of your cage to shine. See how the world reacts to the animal you have always wanted to be. But don't worry if you can't think of an idea because I'm sure mom and dad have plenty of costume ideas. And if not, just look around the internet for some great characters. How about dressing up like your favourite TV character. Or, look in the library and I'm sure you will get some fabulous thoughts that will excite you with plans. There's always the old white sheet that can be thrown over your head. Just cut out some eyes so you don't trip and spill your bag of treats. Last year my grandson asked his dad to shave a circles on the top of his head with lots of hair remaining in a circle around the bald spot. He threw on a brown cape and went as a monk and he won first prize at his school. I don't think he realized how permanent this costume was until that night after trick or treating. Dad shaved off the rest of his hair and he was bald for many weeks until his beautiful waves grew back. No matter what you wear, I'm sure your favourite part of Halloween is the bag full of treats you bring back home and hide in your closet so that your mom and dad won't eat all your chocolate bars. Be careful out in the neighbourhood. Not all cars can see you very well so please look both ways and don't cross until the roads are safe. Make sure the costume leaves you a clear view of the street. And try to stay in areas where there are plenty of other children. And most important: HAVE FUN Glorious days of doing nothing, of playing with your friends, or of learning a new computer game, or of time spent pondering what school will be like after the summer break, have come to an end.
Did you have a fantastic summer, or was it just so, so? What was the most exciting thing you did this summer? Was it a book you read, or an event you attended, or maybe you climbed Mount Everest and gazed at the world from above. Whatever you did, I would love to hear about it? My most exciting moment came when I went zip lining with my 13 year old grandson. I guess I didn't want him to think I was just an old lady who was out of shape. The worst part about the zip lining turned out to be the climb to the top of the ski hill to be hooked onto the zip line. I was so out of breath, by the time I arrived at the top of hundred of stairs, that I was glad to just hang in the air and catch my breath again. This past weekend I went camping at Elora Conservation Park in Elora, Ontario, Canada. There are many activities in the park to keep you and the kids occupied and happy. Tubes are available for rent so that everyone can enjoy a lazy ride down the white water rapids. But try to arrive at the rental area before breakfast to pick up your tubes and helmets, because the line starts forming bright and early, and you don't want the tubes to run out before you get to the front of the line. At the end of the white water rafting there is a bus to catch which will take you back to the beginning of the ride. But if you would rather just be lazy and rest in your tube, there is lots of space in the water to just lie back and relax while you drift around gazing at the scenery. At the quarry itself, which is surrounded by cliffs that are 40 feet high, you can swim in the cool, deep water or you can enjoy cliff jumping if the mood strikes. There are many trails weaving through the woods at the edge of the high cliffs above the white water and the river. These trails make for great hiking through the wooded camp grounds of the park. The smell of campfires burning, early in the morning and in the evening, are very inviting and often you will catch the scent of coffee freshly brewing. The video below is one I took while hiking past a large area of wild snap dragons. It was bee feeding time. Please enjoy the video. BEE FEEDINGS |

AuthorJean Horst is a mom and grammy living along the sandy shores of Lake Huron in the summer. The rest of the time, when I'm not travelling to get new ideas for children's books, I live in Waterloo, Ontario Canada. I love writing kids books. My reward is seeing the smiles on the faces of children. |
